12:15pm | Wanda Morris, Executive Director, Dying with Dignity Canada.
TOPIC – Dying with Dignity in Canada.
INFO – The recent decision in the Carter Challenge in BC means that assisted dying could become a legal option for all Canadians in less than a year.
Why did Madame Justice Lynn Smith, the BC Supreme Court judge, over-turn the previous prohibition on medical aid in dying? How will this decision affect ordinary Canadians?
BIO – Wanda Morris is a Chartered Accountant and also holds a Master of Arts Degree in Transforming Spirituality.
Prior to becoming the Executive Director of dying with dignity Canada on November 1, 2010, Wanda was on the Board of Directors, most recently as the Vice President. Wanda presented to the Parliamentary Committee on Palliative and Compassionate Care in 2010 and provided testimony as part of the Carter Challenge for the BC Supreme court. She has been involved in the Right to Die movement for many years.
Wanda’s viewpoint: “I think as a society we are too scared of death. We need to see death as part of the cycle of life and not go to extraordinary lengths (and expense) to preserve life when death is the kinder option.
As Canadians we have a number of rights. Now it’s time that we have one more. If a time comes when I am suffering and want to end my life, I hope I can choose my time, gather my loved ones around me and gently go into the good night.”
