With the recent, tragic loss of beloved singer/songwriter Glen Campbell, we are reminded that over 560,000 Canadians are living with Alzheimer’s or another dementia illness. Globally, at least 44 million people are living with dementia, more than the total population of Canada, making the disease a global health crisis. Of the 564,000 Canadians are living with dementia, including Alzheimer’s disease, today 65% of the current number of Canadians who have dementia and who are over the age of 65 are women and each year, 25,000 more Canadians will be diagnosed with dementia. In less than 15 years, close to a million Canadians will have dementia. We speak with the CEO of the Alzheimer’s Society of Toronto, Cathy Barrick and Dr. Carmella Tartaglia, a neurologist with the Toronto Western Hospital Memory Clinic to get the latest information.
