With the Federal and Provincial Finance Ministers and Mayor John Tory meeting to discuss skyrocketing real estate prices in the GTA, most observers expect a foreign buyers’ tax even though it is unclear how much of the market is being driven by foreigners. The Mayor wants a tax on vacant properties and there has been talk about new taxes on speculators. Are these measures a good idea? Could there be unforeseen consequences? Sal Guatieri, Director BMO Capital markets weighs in.
