COFFEE CUP RECYCLING ISSUE:  Throughout the month, the city has been reminding Torontonians which items can and cannot be recycled. Most people are very surprised to learn that their take out coffee cups are NOT recyclable, and the cups should be thrown out into the garbage. This, due to the fact that the most commonly used take out coffee cups are actually lined with a plastic or wax coating, thus making them unfit for recycling.

According to the city, an estimated 45,000 tonnes of garbage was mistakenly put into recycling bins last year alone with coffee cups accounting for a significant portion. We’ll be speaking about this coffee cup recycling dilemma with expert Emily Alfred from The Toronto Environmental Alliance.
