This week on Finding Your Bliss, Life Coach and Bliss Expert Judy Librach is joined by artist, art consultant & interior designer, Sara Petroff!

Sara says that she was put on this earth to create and only in recent years has she given herself permission to fully unleash her untapped potential. With degrees in both Visual Fine Arts and Interior Design, she has served as the curator and artistic director of Toronto’s prominent Petroff Gallery for over 20 years, coached countless artists in their professional practice, juried art shows, taught art and sat on several boards and advisory committees in the arts. All the while dreaming that it should be her artwork up on those gallery walls! In 2013, she sold the gallery to establish Petroff Design, a thriving Interior Design and Art Consulting practice, with the intent of striking a balance between her day job in front of the computer and her dream job in her studio, where she is truly happiest – hands dirty, pushing the medium and creating something from nothing. She was born an artist, but she has taken the scenic route to get back to where she is really meant to be. For Sara, the question is, “If not me, then who? And if not now, then when?”

Drawn to rescuing traces of time through memory-filled papers, her mixed media sculptural collages are intended to reframe obsolete ephemera in a new light. Working in a multitude of media, layering & sculpting these papers, Sara breathes new life into old items, where emotional value is repurposed & reinvested with new meaning & narratives. Often in the form of clothing, her work is never intended as historical costume, but rather to serve as an intimate & familiar safe space into which the viewer brings forward their own Memories.

Similarly, in Sara’s Judaic body of work, “old prayers and texts are explored in creative artistic interpretations, keeping our rich history alive and relevant to our children.” These are multi-media narratives of lives lived, sculpted from paper and mixed with history. With each new work, her work gains in depth, technique and audience. The multi-dimensional nature of Sara’s art is always best appreciated in person.
