Leanne Matlow is a cognitive behavioural therapy counsellor with a private practice specializing in anxiety for children and adolescents. She is trained as a teacher and guidance counsellor, with a Master’s from Toronto’s Institute of Child Study, OISE and certificates in CBT from the Beck Institute in Philadelphia. Discovering the prevalence of anxiety issues in the classroom setting and their regular misdiagnosis as academic concerns, Leanne has become a mental health advocate who speaks regularly about anxiety in the classroom to parent and teacher groups. Leanne founded and organizes the annual Mental Health Empowerment Day symposium to increase the understanding of parents and those who work with children and youth, regarding mental health issues. She is also the author of a wonderful book called “Thinking About Thoughts”. Leanne is the 2019 Inspiration Award Winner for the Women of Action of the Israel Cancer Research Fund and was the Co-Chair of the UJA Campaign for 2021.
Michele Viner, Vice Chair of Mental Health Empowerment Day, is a parent who has lived experience with mental health issues and has become an advocate. She is also a writer who has written for publications such as Chatelaine, Canadian Living and Today’s Parent. Currently, she is writing about the topic of mental health and wellness through her blog, A Little Wordy on Substack, and through her book, “A Few Words About Mental Health”. She lends her expertise to Mental Health Empowerment Day to help spread the word, educate, and work to eradicate stigma.
