ONTARIO TO SCRAP LICENCE PLATE STICKERS

Libby Znaimer is joined by Councillor Brad Bradford, Ward 19 Beaches-East York and member of the Toronto Parking Authority alongside Frank Clayton, Senior Research Fellow at the Centre for Urban Research and Land Development and Elliottt Silverstein, Director of Government Relations for CAA Insurance.

We know that the province has plans to scrap licence plate stickers and, this week, Premier Doug Ford announced that it will be providing rebates to vehicle owners who bought them during the pandemic. So, just how much lost revenue will this move have? As much as $1.1 billion! Treasury Board President Prabmeet Sarkaria said that the province has no plans to cut back on any services to make this happen. But, who will pay for it in the end? And, also, what implications will this have on the enforcement and insurance related to vehicles.

Meanwhile, on another transportation-related note, the Ford government is also promising to remove highway tolls for two highways: the 412 and 418. So, why is this important and how do you feel about it? And, with the provincial election just months away, are these announcements just political campaigning?

“THE WAR ON CHIPS” & HIGH COST OF DAIRY IN CANADA

Libby Znaimer is joined by Dr. Sylvain Charlebois, Senior Director, Agri-Food Analytics Lab, Dalhousie University.

Frito-Lay chips, a brand owned by PepsiCo Canada, are not being sold to grocery giant Loblaws after the latter refused to increase the price of their products. The reality is that food manufacturers have suggested prices for their products and when the manufacturer deals with challenges like labour shortages, supply chain problems and low profit margins, asking retailers to up the price is not unusual. Dr. Charlebois explains that, in fact, this kind of tug-of-war exists with dairy, bakery and other food products too.

MICHAEL LEVITT ON ANTISEMITISM INCIDENTS AT TDSB

Libby Znaimer is joined by Michael Levitt, President and CEO of Friends of Simon Wiesenthal Center for Holocaust Studies.

The TDSB has an antisemitism problem. Last week at Valley Park Middle School in North York, a teacher, who is the descendant of Holocaust survivors, was surrounded by students in class who performed a heil Hitler salute. Earlier in the month, a similar incident happened at another North York school (Charles H. Best Middle School) where students performed a Nazi salute to their classmates. So, how could this have happened? And, what does Michael suggest that the TDSB should be doing to combat this issue? He weighs in.
