Today: all eyes are on Ottawa where two very big events are unfolding. Of course, there is the ongoing trucker protest against vaccine mandates which has quickly evolved into something ugly as some demonstrators waved Confederate flags and swastikas and disrespect the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier. But, now we are also learning that Erin O’Toole’s future as leader of the Conservative Party of Canada is being challenged as he faces yet another leadership review. This time, it was sparked by a letter signed by 35 MPs who want a vote. Can Erin survive a caucus revolt this time around or will we be talking about a very different kind of party in the weeks and months to come? Our panel weighs in on the latest.

Libby Znaimer is joined by Lori Marshall, CEO, Chatham-Kent Health Alliance (CKHA) and Dr. Adam Dukelow, Interim Executive Vice President-Chief Medical Officer & Chief Quality Officer at the London Health Sciences Centre.

Some media reports said that non-urgent surgeries would resume in Ontario hospitals starting this past Monday. But, we’re now hearing from some stakeholders in the health care system that this isn’t exactly what is happening. According to Lori, her hospital hasn’t yet received any clear guidance from the province to resume such surgeries. She also points out that elective surgeries aren’t even included in the list of phase 1 of reopening. So,what is the timeline of our non-urgent surgeries resuming and just how bad of a backlog can we expect in the weeks and months ahead? According to Lori, it could take up to a year. Dr. Dukelow says that at his hospital there are over 7,000 surgical cases in the backlog.
