On May 28, 1966 Percy Sledge started a two week run at No.1 on the US singles chart with the song When A Man Loves A Woman. When Percy Sledge went in to record this song, it had no title or lyrics, just a melody. The recording session proceeded with the expectation that Sledge would produce them for the vocal takes. When it came time to record his vocals, Sledge improvised the lyrics. The performance was so amazing that everyone in the room had assumed he had written the lyrics down.
