On April 10, 1970, Paul McCartney released a pressed statement in which he announced that The Beatles had split. 27-year-old McCartney issued this statement one week before his solo album came out. John Lennon, who had kept his earlier decision to leave The Beatles quiet for the sake of the other members was outraged when McCartney said, “I have no future plans to record to appear with The Beatles again, or to write any music with John.” When asked for his rebuttal comment Lennon said, “Paul hasn’t left. I sacked him.”
