Bob Dylan played an electric set at The Newport Folk Festival in Newport, Rhode Island. The audience can be heard both booing and applauding Dylan. According to Jonathan Taplin, Dylan’s decision to play electric was made on a whim to challenge the festival.

It would be 37 years before Dylan would return to The Newport Folk Festival. In 2002 he played a set wearing a wig and fake beard.
