American composer and pianist George Gershwin dies at the age of 39 from a brain tumour. Gershwin wrote a variety of works from the orchestral piece Rhapsody in Blue to the Opera Porgy and Bess to the musical Funny Face. While George wrote the music, his brother Ira Gershwin wrote the lyrics. He also wrote original scores for a number of films.
