The Beach Boys had a number one hit with their single ‘I Get Around.’ The song topped the charts for two weeks straight. In an interview in Melody Maker in August of 1969, songwriter Brian Wilson said of The Beach Boys subject matter:

“It wasn’t a conscious thing to build our music around surfing. We just want to be identified with the interests of young kids. That’s why we also got into the hot rod scene. Kids love to talk about cars, so what’s more natural than to give them music to go with it. But the trends keep moving. Surfing is now strictly passe as far as the music goes, and hot rods have reached their peak…”
