MASK BYLAWS COMING TO THE GTA

Mayors around the GTHA are introducing temporary bylaws that will make it mandatory for people to wear masks or face coverings in public settings when physical distancing is not possible.

Mayor John Tory announced the new measures Tuesday morning and that Toronto city council will vote on the measures. Some municipalities like Kingston already have similar rules and even fines in place.

“We know we are at a critical time in the fight against COVID-19 and that we must do everything we can to avoid the flare-ups we’ve seen in other places,” said Tory. “All of these measures will help stop the spread of COVID-19 right across the GTA.

Tory says bylaw enforcement would come into effect on July 7, a week after council’s approval and would focus on education rather than punishment. The law would apply to all indoor public spaces.

Exemptions would be allowed on medical health reasons and for children under two years old.
