After a brutal winter, the cherry blossoms are finally opening up at High Park, one of a dozen sites around the city where you’ll find these bright pink blossoms.
The signs are back up at the park with the cheeky message “Keep off the bloomin’ trees.” Steve Joniak, also known as Sakura Steve, started a video blog on his website to keep cherry blossom enthusiasts up to date on the progress of the blooms. This year, the park is a car-free zone to avoid congestion. Most visitors seem to like the idea, however some have complained that it’s now difficult for people with mobility issues to walk into the park. The Sakura tree is sacred in Japan; symbol of spring and a time for renewal. Joniak says it’s a reminder that life is short and fleeting because depending on the weather, the vibrant pink blossoms last between just 4 and 10 days. Check out Steve Joniak’s videos here
