North York General Hospital will be helping a Scarborough Long Term Care home struggling under a major COVID-19 outbreak.

 

The Tendercare Living Centre, which has 254 beds, has 121 active cases. 24 residents have died and 49 staff members have also tested positive.

With so many employees having tested positive, staffing levels are low and residents aren’t getting proper care.

On the Thursday edition of Zoomer Radio’s “Fight Back with Libby Znaimer,” Jane Meadus, a lawyer and institutional advocate at the Advocacy Centre for the Elderly says an inspector’s report from December 17th paints a grim picture of the situation.

“There were very poor infection control protocols, they didn’t have proper materials, they weren’t following proper protocols,” said Meadus. “We’re into December now and they don’t know how to follow these rules. It’s ludicrous. This is a home that’s not owned by Extendicare but it’s run by Extendicare.”

So far, the province has not called for military help despite growing calls for action.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said Wednesday that the military can only respond to situations at the request of the provinces.
