Canada is days away from having a second vaccine join in the country’s efforts against COVID-19.

Health Canada gave its seal of approval to Moderna’s vaccine on Wednesday morning. With the approval, about 168,000 doses of the vaccine could be in Canada by next week.

Much like the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine approved last week, the Moderna vaccine requires two shots three weeks apart. Unlike the earlier-approved vaccine, Moderna’s is easier to transport and store. That means it will be easier to get to remote, northern and First Nations communities.

“Moderna will be the first COVID-19 vaccine to be delivered to Canada’s remote and isolate communities into Canada’s north,” said Major General Dany Fortin, who’s leading the vaccine distribution efforts.

“Last week, we complete to dry run to confirm the ordering and the shipping processes for the Moderna vaccine.”

Also on Wednesday, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced Canada will receive an extra 250,000 doses of the Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine in January. That means Canada is scheduled to receive about 750,000 doses of that vaccine next month.
