Once there’s a green light for one or more COVID-19 vaccines, Canadians will not be among the first in line.

That’s because they’ll likely be given to those in the country they’re made in.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau acknowledges countries like the U.S., the U.K., and Germany could see some of their citizens vaccinated before Canadians can get their shots because those countries have production facilities and Canada does not.

However, Trudeau says the federal government’s started that work, warning rebuilding that capacity will take years.

The prime minister reminds Canadians the government has already pre-purchased a number of vaccine candidates from foreign manufacturers, which will help Canadians get doses as soon as possible.

Meanwhile, Trudeau announced Ottawa’s bought 26,000 doses of a treatment for COVID-19 from Eli Lilly and Vancouver’s AbCellera Biologics, with an option to buy thousands more.

The treatment uses anti-bodies from someone who had already had the virus.
