This year’s $100,000 Giller Prize goes to a 42 year old Torontonian, who was born in a refugee camp in Thailand and came to Canada as a child.

Souvankham Thammavongsa was named the winner for her short story collection “How to Pronounce Knife” which she says is almost a living history of her family’s arrival in this country.
The title comes from a moment when the author mispronounced “knife” in an ESL class.
The jury called the book a stunning collection of stories that cut to the core of the immigrant reality like a knife, however you pronounce it.
