The Ford government is imposing new temporary restrictions in Toronto, Peel Region and Ottawa in hopes of slowing the spread of COVID-19.
Starting at Saturday and lasting at least 28 days, the ”modified stage 2” approach will mean no indoor dining at restaurants and bars, closing gyms, movie theatres and casino, limiting team sports and asking residents in those areas not to travel unless except for essential purpose, including work and physical activity.
Travel from hot spots to areas with few cases is also not advised.
In addition to gyms and casinos, the government’s also temporarily closing yoga studios, fitness centres, bingo halls and other gaming establishments.
Exhibits at museums, galleries, zoos and science centres will also be closed.
Schools and places of worship are allowed to remain open.
Weddings this weekend will be allowed to proceed but as of Tuesday, wedding receptions will be temporarily suspended.
Meanwhile, the city of Toronto’s announced the immediate cancellation of all hockey, skating and swimming lesson and other indoor programs at its recreation centres.
Pools and rinks will stay open only for drop-in leisure skating and lane-swimming but all permits for indoor sports or social gatherings will be cancelled.
The city will refund all fees to the 20,000 who’d signed up for various programs.
Schools and courts will be exempted from indoor gathering caps of 10, which are being extended.
Outdoor gatherings will be limited to 25.
