Canadian singer, songwriter, poet and novelist Leonard Cohen was born on this date in Montreal in 1934.

He first pursued a career as a poet and novelist during the 1950s and early ’60s, and didn’t begin a music career until late 60s when he sang two of his works, ”Suzanne” and ”Stranger,” during a reading in New York City.

Cohen released his first album, ”Songs of Leonard Cohen,” in 1967.

Perhaps his most iconic song, ”Hallelujah,” was first released on his 1984 album ”Various Positions.”

The album ”You Want It Darker” was released in 2016, three weeks before his death at the age of 82.

A posthumous album ”Thanks for the Dance,” was released last November.

Leonard Cohen was inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1991, the Canadian Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2006, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2008.
