Online retailer Amazon’s announced it’s opening two ”fulfilment” centres on either side of the Greater Toronto Area that’ll mean 2,500 full-time jobs.
One will be in Hamilton and employ about, 1500; the other in Ajax will have around 1,000 workers.
Both are scheduled to open next year.
Fulfilment centres are where Amazon processes orders before sending them out to customers.
With the new centres, Ontario will have 10 of the 16 across Canada.
In addition to the fulfilment centres or warehouses, Amazon’s adding 3 delivery stations in and around Toronto that process and dispatch the so-called ”last mile” of deliveries.
These will be located in Stoney Creek, Scarborough and Vaughan.
All this is part of a larger hiring spree by the company that plans to add 33,000 tech and office staff across the U.S., on top of the 175,000 Amazon’s hired at distribution centres since the pandemic hit.
The company’s global workforce recently topped 1-million, making Amazon the second largest employer behind Walmart.
