It’s important and welcome news for loved ones of long term care residents.

The provincial PCs are clarifying visiting rules for nursing homes in order to give families and caregivers greater access.

Beginning Wednesday September 9th, essential caregivers will be allowed to visit homes, including during COVID-19 outbreaks, subject to direction from the local health unit.

The new policy means a resident can designate two caregivers who may visit without time limits.

If a home is not in outbreak, or the resident is asymptomatic, the caregivers can visit together.

Since mid-June, essential visitors like family members have been allowed to visit homes to help provide care.

But the governing Tories says rules have been applied inconsistently and left up to the discretion of homes.
