Less than 24 hours after thousands of pages of documents detailing what was involved in awarding a major government contract to We Charity, the Official opposition is accusing the Trudeau Liberals of a massive cover-up.
Conservative finance critic Pierre Poilievre and ethics critic Michael Barrett claim by proroguing Parliament until September 23 the government’s dodging scrutiny of the Liberals role in the student-grant scandal.
Both say the heavily redacted documents amount to a ”cover-up.”
”It’s clear Justin Trudeau has something to hide,” according to Poilievre.
”He does not want Canadians to know what’s in these documents, and that’s why he shut down this parliamentary investigation.”
By proroguing Parliament it effectively ends the current work of Commons committees investigating the scandal.
Poilievre says the fact many of the documents are blacked out means MPs won’t be able to ask about them until after the House returns.
When it does, there will be a speech from the throne, which will give the opposition parties the chance to vote on whether they have confidence in the government.
With the Conservatives set to elect Andrew Scheer’s successor in four days, they won’t yet commit to defeating the government by voting against the throne speech.
Poilievre says the Tories don’t want an election until after the full truth of the scandal is known.
