Conservative finance critic Pierre Poilievre says that Bill Morneau, who resigned last night, will be found guilty for a third time of violating the ethics act, and that’s something Justin Trudeau didn’t want swirling around his government.

Morneau and the prime minister are being investigated by the ethics commissioner for possible conflict-of-interest in the WE Charity scandal.

Morneau is interested in the position of secretary-general of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD).

In a statement, Trudeau says Canada would ”vigorously support” Morneau’s efforts to land the job.

The government’s planning a cabinet retreat in the middle of September with the intention of proroguing Parliament and presenting an economic recovery plan in a throne speech in early October.
