After going 102 days without any cases of COVID-19 within its borders, New Zealand has now had to re-implement lockdown measures to prevent a new spread.

The latest outbreak started with four cases in one family in Aukland. Authorities are still trying to figure out where they contracted the virus but those four cases led to four community spread cases.

Contact tracers are now fearing that there could be as many as 200 other cases stemming from this outbreak.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern has quickly responded as they try to once again eliminate the virus from the country.

“Our response to the virus has worked. It opened our economy in our communities and it gave New Zealanders freedoms we cherish and we all want to get back there as soon as we can,” said Ardern. “Success relies on all of us working together and looking out for one another. We know how to beat this but we also don’t have to look far to see what can happen if we don’t get on top of it. We have a plan and now’s the time to follow it.”

Aukland has moved to alert level three today. That means bars and other businesses are closed and people are being asked to stay home.
