Food insecurity is soaring as Toronto’s Daily Bread Food Bank reports a major spike in new clients since the pandemic hit.
Just released survey findings show the rate of clients has more than tripled from 2,000 in February to 6,100 last month.
Among the other findings, about three-quarters of new clients began going to food banks as a result of job losses and reduced hours, approximately one-quarter of those surveyed received the Canada Emergency Response Benefit (CERB), but still needed to rely on food assistance, while one-third say they will not be able to pay rent in four to six-months.
