With much of the province moving into stage three of the reopening, the group representing doctors is sounding a note of concern.
The Ontario Medical Association is asking the province to reconsider its decision to allow bars to start reopening in areas in stage three. Bars in the province are now allowed to do just that–Toronto and the GTHA a notable exception.
OMA president Dr. Samantha Hill says bars are one of the places that carry the highest risk for COVID-19 spread.
Dr. Hill notes that alcohol lowers inhibitions and could make people forget concepts like physical distancing and proper hand sanitizing.
Ventilation in bars is another issue, the OMA says could lead to increased transmission. Montreal is used as an example of an area that has seen a spike in cases among younger people not longer after allowing bars to reopen.
