Millions of older Canadians will soon receive COVID-19 related financial assistance to offset increases in the cost-of-living.
After announcing the one-time top-up in mid-May, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau now says a tax-free payment of $300 to the more than 6-million who receive Old Age Security benefits will go out the week of July 6.
The 2.2-million Canadians who get the Guaranteed Income Supplement will get $200.
Those eligible for both will receive $500.
Seniors who already receive benefits won’t have to apply for this payment.
Those living in Canada can expect payment by direct deposit or cheque that week.
Anyone living outside the country should expect delays if they receive cheques in the mail given international disruptions.
The funds will amount to $2.5-billion.
