Justin Trudeau’s long been careful not to be critical of Donald Trump.
The latest example came Tuesday during the prime minister’s daily briefing on COVID-19 when a reporter asked what Trudeau thought about the president’s words and actions in response to the protests over the death of George Floyd in the custody of Minneapolis police.
”We all watch in horror and consternation at what is going on in the United States,” Trudeau said after taking 20 seconds to respond.
”It is a time to pull people together … it is a time to listen. It is a time to learn, when injustices continue despite progress over years and decades.”
Trudeau did not mention Trump by name nor criticize his handling of the situation.
On Monday, the president directed police and national guardsmen under his control to forcibly remove protesters from a park right across from the White House, so Trump could walk to a neighbouring church for a photo opportunity.
Asked by the same reporter why he did not want to directly comment on the president, Trudeau said his job is to focus on Canadians.
