The way in which Canada’s premiers have handled COVID-19 has proven to be a political win for most of them.

The latest Angus Reid Institute survey shows New Brunswick’s Blaine Higgs has seen the largest gain in popularity, 32%, for an approval rating of 80%.

Quebec’s Francois Legault is close behind at 77% after seeing a gain of 19% in popularity.

Those two face significantly different situations.

Higgs and his Conservative government are overseeing a province with just one active case and just 121 in total.

New Brunswick’s moving into its ”yellow phase” which will permit larger gatherings and more economic activity in the coming weeks.

The epicentre of the pandemic in Canada has been Quebec with nearly double the number of cases there than Ontario, despite five-million fewer residents.

B.C.’s John Horgan is in third, gaining 25% for an approval rating of 71%.

That’s just two more than Doug Ford, who’s seen a 38% jump in popularity; the biggest increase of any of the provincial leaders.

It’s the first time he’s held majority approval since his election, which is likely attributable to a change some have called the ”new Doug Ford.”
