The Memorial Day weekend in the U.S. is traditionally the beginning of Hollywood’s summer-long celebration of the blockbuster.

This is how Cineplex is handling the pandemic at its theatres | News

Superhero movies, sequels and other big-budget flicks traditionally dot the summer calendar.

But not this year.

Due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, theatres remain shuttered as cities continue with rules against gathering in groups. So at least for this year, instead of movies that rake in hundreds of millions of dollars for movie studios and the screens that show them, they’ll be raking in zero dollars.

Last year, it was “Aladdin” dominating at the box office and this year was supposed to see the latest “Fast and Furious” movie. Many movies have delayed their openings while others are moving right into streaming services.

There’s no set date on when people could start going to movie theatres again in Ontario.
