The Canadian Armed Forces says 28 members have tested positive for COVID-19 after being sent to help at long-term care homes in Quebec and Ontario.

That’s up from just five cases announced last week.

The new numbers includes 12 more in Ontario.

The Armed Forces had previously indicated it was going to provide updates every two weeks, but now says it’ll put out daily updates, suggesting the military expects there to be more cases. 

The military says nearly 17,000 members are working in 25 Quebec facilities and in five in Ontario, where regular staff have been overwhelmed by the coronavirus.

Most are working in support roles like cleaning, serving food and helping with residents’ basic needs.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said the federal government’s considering paying those military members extra, as it would on hazardous deployments abroad.
