Cyclists and pedestrians in Toronto are getting more room to roam as the city has been expanding their space on some roads.

Toronto has closed some streets to vehicle traffic in busy areas like this one, at Jameson Ave. and Lake Shore Blvd., to give cyclists, pedestrians and runners enough room to pass each other while adhering to physical-distancing guidelines.

ActiveTO will see 57 kilometres converted to so-called “Quiet streets” to help physical distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic.

This weekend also saw part of the eastbound lanes on Lakeshore closed to vehicle traffic to allow plenty of room to safely get outside.

Mayor John Tory says that stretch of road will be open to normal traffic after the long weekend.

“It’s going to be closed until the end of the day Monday,” Tory told CP24 this morning. “The whole idea was to try a route like that where we had congestion down by the waterfront. A lot of people cycle and walk down there. We didn’t want to put people in a position where, if they wanted to go there, they had to be in a situation where they would be too crowded together.”

Cities around the world have been re-imagining their roads, limiting space to vehicle traffic and maximizing room for people to safely get outside.
