There appears to be mixed messages about the dangers of catching a COVID-19 infection while out walking in the park.

British Columbia’s Medical Officer of Health Dr. Bonnie Henry says spending time in parks is good for mental health and risk of contracting COVID-19 is low.

Thursday morning, Mayor John Tory said Doctor Henry’s words are being taken out of context.

“It is dangerous to go to a park and be in close proximity to other people, sitting next to each other on a bench, standing around having a chat, playing a game where you’re throwing a frisbee back and forth with the virus perhaps attaching itself to the frisbee,” Mayor Tory explained.

And the mayor says he’s sure that Dr. Henry would say “yes, go outside, but stay away from each other and keep your distance and preferably be outside in your yard at home.”

Ontario’s top doctor, David Williams, is also urging people to stay at the task of physical distancing this weekend as many parts of the province, including Toronto, see the first signs of summer like weather.
