The makers of Lysol disinfectant products have released a statement saying their products are not for internal consumption after musings made by the President of the United States at his daily COVID-19 media briefing on Thursday.
Reckitt Benckiser (RB), which makes a number of household disinfectant products, including Lysol, say: “We must be clear that under no circumstance should our disinfectant products be administered into the human body.”
The rare rebuke of the President come after Donald Trump mused that they, along with sunlight were possible treatments for the novel coronavirus.
“And then I see that the disinfectant knocks it out within a minute and is there a way we can do something like that by injection or inside,” Trump suggested. “Almost a cleaning when you see it gets in the lungs and does a tremendous number so it would be interesting to check that.”
This isn’t the first time the President has touted possible cures to the virus. Preliminary studies have shown that hydroxycholoroquine, a malaria drug that was touted by Trump, doesn’t provide help to COVID-19 patients.
