Saying it’s to further drive home the message that people have to keep their distance from each other, Toronto Mayor John Tory announced a new bylaw.
”Any two people who don’t live together who fail to keep two-metres of distance between them in a park or a public square will be subject to prosecution and will, upon conviction, be liable for a fine of up to $5,000,” Tory said.
Police Chief Mark Saunders says his officers are ready to go.
”Effective immediately, we’ll be ramping up to approximately 160 uniformed officers. We’ll also have a compliment of civilian folks; our special constables, as well as our parking enforcement officers that will be participating in this whole process,” added Saunders.
The city will also have 200 bylaw officers looking for violators.
”There have been plenty of warnings,” said the mayor in summing up reasons for taking this step.
