The Supreme Court of Canada will consider the legality of the Ford government’s controversial move to slash the size of Toronto City Council.

The province passed a law halfway through the last municipal election campaign, reducing the number of seats from 47 to 25.

At the time, the premier said the move would not only improve decision making but save $25-million.

Critics accused Doug Ford; a former Toronto city councillor and failed mayoral candidate, of political interference and flouting democracy.

Initially, a provincial judge found the law unconstitutional.

But the Ontario Court of Appeal, the province’s highest court, overturned that decision last year, prompting the city to decide to take it all the way to Canada’s highest court.
