The provincial government says they’ll stop manufacturing those problematic new licence plates on March 4.

Starting the next day, the old blue and white plates will be issues until new redesigned plates are made.

The Progressive Conservative government has acknowledged there is a problem with the new plates that makes them difficult to read in the dark.

NDP Transportation critic Jennifer French says she doesn’t know why the new faulty plates will continue to be issued until next week.

“They have known that there’s a problem and I would argue that they have known since day one despite what they have been saying despite the fact they’re trying to hide from this,” said French at Queen’s Park. “I think the only way to hide from this would be behind a licence plate, frankly. But they have known from the beginning there’s been a problem. It has been pointed out by the average Ontarian and also safety professionals.”

Government and Consumer Services Minister Lisa Thompson says the government has reached a solution with manufacturer 3M Canada at no cost to taxpayers.

She says law enforcement and other stakeholders will be conducting testing.

But the government will not identify the root cause of the problem with the plates.
