Oscar’s top prize, best picture, has been awarded to a foreign language film for the first time in the Academy Awards’ 92 year history.

Parasite by director Bong Joon Ho tells the tale of a family of swindlers who insinuate themselves into the lives of a wealthy family, putting a harsh spotlight on class differences in South Korea.

In fact, the film won four Oscars including best director for Bong and best international film.

In another special moment, Laura Dern won best supporting actress honours for her role in the Netflix movie Marriage Story, and thanked the two people who’ve provided her the most inspiration.

Looking on from the audience with pride and tears was 84 year old Diane Ladd.

In the best supporting actor category, Brad Pitt won for Once Upon a Time in Hollywood.

Renee Zellweger took the best actress trophy for her portrayal of Judy Garland in Judy and Joaquin Phoenix won best actor for the title role in Joker.

50 year old Zellweger dedicated her Oscar to the iconic singer whom she played.

“Miss Garland, you are certainly among the heroes who unite and define us and this is certainly for you,” Zellweger said in acceptance.

It was a comeback for Renee Zellweger who took a break in 2010 to take care of herself after experiencing depression. Zellweger won her first Oscar in 2004 for her supporting role in Cold Mountain.

Twenty-five years after winning his first Oscar, Elton John has picked up his second academy award.

72 year old Elton John has won the best original song award for (I’m Gonna) Love Me Again from his biopic Rocketman, sharing the honour with longtime collaborator Bernie Taupin.

Elton John won an Oscar with Tim Rice for Can You Feel the Love Tonight from the original The Lion King at the 1995 Academy Awards.

And for best original score, the Oscar has gone to Hildur GuAnadottir for Joker. The last woman composer to win best score was Anne Dudley in 1998 for The Full Monty.
