A report out of Britain says Canada’s prime minister has agreed that taxpayers in this country should pick up the bill for Harry and Meghan’s round the clock protection while they are in Canada.

The Evening Standard says Justin Trudeau has privately assured the Queen that Harry, Meghan and their son Archie’s safety will not be jeopardized while they reside in Canada.

On Tuesday, when asked about security detail for the Duke and Duchess, Trudeau said, “I have not spoken to Her Majesty directly.”

The prime minister also told reporters in Winnipeg he did not know yet if Canadian taxpayers will be on the hook for security or for how much.

“Discussions continue to be ongoing and I have no updates at this point,” Trudeau said.

Canada’s public safety minister also weighed in, saying that right now Canada is not engaged in providing security services for Harry and Meghan.

Bill Blair said on Tuesday, Canadian officials will have to reassess the couple’s security needs as their status as internationally protected persons is currently in flux. He said the work is ongoing and has not yet been resolved.

Harry, Meghan and Archie are believed to be staying on Vancouver Island.
