There are some 300,000 of the old red and white health cards still in circulation in Ontario. But as of July 1st, the cards will no longer be accepted.
Health Minister Christine Elliot says if you are still using the old health card, you will soon be contacted with details on how to get a new health card.
“We are going to ramp up of course to July 1st,” Elliot explained, “People will start receiving notices this month that July 1st will be the end date for use of the red and white card and they will be receiving monthly reminders.”
It’s been more than 25 years since the province first started phasing out the red and white health cards.
Elliott says those cards are more susceptible to fraud than the newer cards, which feature a photo and a signature.
