Federal scientists are about to announce changes to Canadian building codes that for the first time reflect climate change.
The changes are the result of a five-year, $43-million dollar program that has involved more than 100 staff at the National Research Council.
Program head Marianne Armstrong says wildfires and flooding are two of the main challenges facing Canada’s buildings, roads, sewers, bridges and other infrastructure.
Changes to be announced this year include new rules for how buildings resist wind, bear snow loads and collect rainwater.
Automatic backflow systems to reduce flooding will also be required.
Armstrong says research continues and more changes are likely to come in 2025, the next time building codes need to be updated.
