Andrew Scheer is not staying on as he repeatedly vowed following the October 21 election.
He informed the Conservative caucus this morning of his decision to resign, and then in his formal announcement in the Commons, Scheer said he did not reach the decision lightly but only after long talks with those close to him.

”In order to chart the course ahead, this party, this movement, needs someone who can give 100-percent to the efforts, and after some conversations with my kids, my loved ones, I felt it was time to put my family first,” said Scheer.
”Our Conservative team is always stronger when we are united.”
Scheer will stay on until his successor is chosen and will continue as MP ”for the near future.”
He adds he will support the new leader.
”I believe in this party, I believe in our movement, I believe that we will be a government after the next election,” Scheer told the Commons.
Prime Minister Justin Trudeau praised him for making ”significant sacrifices,” while NDP Leader Jagmeet Singh and Block Quebecois Leader Yves-Francois Blanchet also thanked Scheer for his service.
