Saying they remain at odds with the Ford government agenda of cutting costs through increased class sizes and below inflation wage hikes, Ontario’s public high school teachers plan to walkout one day – December 4.
Ontario Secondary School Teachers’ Federation President Harvey Bischof says their two-day old work-to-rule campaign of not filling out report cards or taking part in unpaid meetings has done little to sway the government.
So unless there’s a deal they will walk off the job next Wednesday.
”This is intended to draw further attention to this government’s destructive cuts to the education system,” said Bischof, who pointed out the law requires the union provide five days’ notice and they’ve given six.
”There’s time to reach a deal,” Bischof added.
Education Minister Stephen Lecce says he’s disappointed.
”The decision point to escalate to remove kids from class for a day or for any point of time is unacceptable,”Lecce added.
In a statement the NDP says government proposals on class sizes and mandatory e-learning have pressurized contract talks.
