As safety advocates continuing calling on police and the city to do something about pedestrians killed by drivers on Toronto streets — 34 so far this year — Police Chief Mark Saunders has an idea.

In a report going to the police services board meeting next Thursday, Chief Saunders is calling for the creation of a ”Vision Zero enforcement team.”

Each would consist of three officers and a supervisor that would focus on crash prone areas identified by statistics at a cost of $1-million-a-year.

When police and the city had a similar team at work between 2003 and 2012, crashes dropped by nearly one-quarter.

However that team was disbanded in 2013 amid staff reductions that continued under the police modernization program.
