It appears Ontario doctors are not happy with the idea of improved oversight of the Ontario Health Insurance Plan.

As we reported Monday, Health Minister Christine Elliott has revealed as part of the Ford government’s Fall Economic Statement tomorrow, the OHIP overhaul would see proactive disclosure of doctor billings and tougher audits.

In response to this, former Ontario Medical Association President Doctor Nadia Alam tweeted:

“This is chilling.

Tougher audits like the MRC? The same MRC that led to death of Dr. Tony Hsu, a Welland pediatrician who was literally hounded to death by the MRC over what turned out to be legit billings?

What about @OntariosDoctors proposal for billing education?”

The MRC she references is the Medical Review Committee, which had a mandate in the early 2000s from the Minister of Health to “go after” physicians who do not fit a particular computer program billing practice profile.

Listen for more on the proposal to crack down on doctor billing with the current OMA President Dr. Sohail Gandhi on Zoomer Radio’s Fight Back with Libby Znaimer at about 12:30pm Tuesday.
