The Ford government has announced there will be no forced amalgamation of municipalities.
After an extensive review of 82 upper and lower municipalities in Durham, Halton, Peel, York, Niagara, Waterloo, Muskoka District, Oxford County and Simcoe County, the government has decided against pursuing a ”top-down” approach.

”I want to make it perfectly clear: We will not be imposing these changes on our municipal partners,” announced Municipal Affairs Minister Steve Clark.
Instead, the province will offer $143-million for all 444 municipalities across Ontario to look for ways to lower costs and improve services.
The review followed the Ford government’s move last year to slash Toronto city council nearly in half and cancel the elections for regional chairs in Peel, York, Muskoka and Niagara regions.
