Andrew Scheer unveiled the Conservatives plan for ‘A Safer Canada’ during an election campaign stop in Etobicoke.
He says if he’s elected premier, his party would bring in a new, five-year mandatory prison sentence for those who possess smuggled guns, as well as a five-year mandatory minimum for violent gang crime.
The Conservative leader also pledged to set up a task force to intercept illegal weapons at the Canada-U.S. border.
Saying it’s a prime minister’s ”sacred duty” to keep citizens and streets safe, Scheer says the Liberals under Justin Trudeau have ”failed”.
The Tories have been critical of the Liberals plan to allow cities and provinces to ban handguns, pointing out that the association of police chiefs even say that won’t make communities safer.
Scheer says he would go after ”real criminals”.
Campaigning in Montreal, Trudeau says the Conservatives would ”weaken gun control” while the Liberals want to ”strengthen” it.
The Liberal gun control plan would also ban and buy back military-style assault rifles.
New Democrats also promise to do more to stop gun smuggling while the Greens say they’d further restrict guns to shooting ranges in urban areas.
