Canada’s first Grand Slam singles champ has risen 10 spots in the women’s tennis rankings to number 5 in the world after her U.S. Open victory over 23-time Grand Slam champ Serena Williams.

Bianca Andreescu, who was ranked 152nd ahead of her meteoric rise, is 8-0 against top-10 opponents, will all coming during her breakout 2019 season.

The 19-year-old, a Mississauga native, who now lives in Thornhill, previously won the Rogers Cup last month and the tournament at Indian Wells in March, the start of a 17-match win streak, not counting when she’s had to retire due to injury.

In May a shoulder injury forced Andreescu to withdraw from the French Open after winning her opening match.

She then dropped out of Wimbledon the next month for the same reason.

On the men’s side, Montreal’s Felix Auger-Aliassime slipped two spots to number 21.

Thornhill’s Milos Raonic dropped two as well to number 24 while Richmond Hill’s Denis Shapovalov remains at number 33.
